Gastric Bypass Guide
Is The Gastric Bypass Right For You?
Many people today are turning to the gastric bypass as the solution for their weigh problem but is it really the right answer to your problem?
This is not an easy question to answer as it is necessary to look at a whole variety of different things including the surgery itself and also the long term side effects of gastric bypass and its benefits. A good starting point however is to start by considering 4 things:
- What exactly is a gastric bypass?
Gastric bypass surgery reduces the size of the stomach and bypasses a section of the intestine to physically restrict the amount of food which you can eat and to reduce the number of calories which your body can absorb from that food.
Most importantly, it is a major surgical procedure and there will be long term effects after gastric bypass surgery which you will have to learn to cope with for years to come.
- Are you a suitable candidate for surgery?
This is a serious operation which is intended to deal with a very serious problem and, in general, you will only be considered a suitable candidate for surgery if you are severely overweight with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40. However, if you are also suffering from serious medical problems that are directly associated with your weight then you could be considered suitable for surgery even though your BMI is under 40.
- What are the benefits of this type of surgery?
The most obvious benefit of the gastric bypass is rapid and substantial weight loss which could see you losing as much as a third of your body weight in just one or two years.
However, together with this weight loss you will also frequently see either the disappearance of or a vast improvement in a number of conditions which are weight related including diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
In the majority of cases you will also experience a significant improvement in your emotional state and social world, which can literally put the fun back into your life.
- What are the risks of gastric bypass surgery?
As with any form of major surgery the gastric bypass inevitably carries risks which will vary from one person to the next and which need to be discussed in detail with your own doctor.
However, in general, the risks will include many problems from minor gastric bypass infections to, in rare cases, death. Risks are not however only associated with the surgery itself, but are also seen in the weeks and months following surgery.
For example, you might suffer from a variety of nutritional deficiencies which require treatment, often leaving you with a lifelong need to carefully control your diet and to take daily mineral and vitamin supplements.
You may also find that it is extremely difficult to maintain your weight loss and it is not at all rare for people to overeat, stretch their reduced stomach and begin to regain much of their lost weight.
The gastric bypass is certainly not the solution to the problem of obesity by itself, but it can be very good starting point and set you on the road to new thinner you and to a new and fun lifestyle.
